Fluorescence Probes for Real-time Management of Cyanobacterial Blooms in Drinking Water Sources
نویسندگان
چکیده
The frequency and intensity of toxic cyanobacterial blooms in drinking water sources is an increasing issue. The unpredictability of such blooms would make real-time detection methods a potential tool to help to manage the problem. This study therefore aims to investigate the difficulties associated with commercially available in vivo cyanobacteria fluorescence probes and assess the applicability of these probes. To achieve these goals seven fluorescence probes were assessed for cyanobacteria monitoring in laboratory and filed conditions. This presentation explores the sources of bias with probes, methods to reduce the bias and novel applications of the probe for water treatment adjustment.

Application of in vivo measurements for the management of cyanobacteria breakthrough into drinking water treatment plants.
The increasing presence of potentially toxic cyanobacterial blooms in drinking water sources and within drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) has been reported worldwide. The objectives of this study are to validate the application of in vivo probes for the detection and management of cyanobacteria breakthrough inside DWTPs, and to verify the possibility of treatment adjustment based on inten...

The sudden appearance of toxic cyanobacteria (CB) blooms is still largely unpredictable in waters worldwide. Many post-hoc explanations for CB bloom occurrence relating to physical and biochemical conditions in lakes have been developed. As potentially toxic CB can accumulate in drinking water treatment plants and disrupt water treatment, there is a need for water treatment operators to determi...

Objectives Sardinia populations experienced continuous shortage of water resources for thousands of years. To solve this problem, during 1950-1980, the main rivers were dammed creating 45 reservoirs which rapidly became eutrophic or hypertrophic, with toxic cyanobacterial blooms and a generally poor water quality. In order to investigate relations between some cancers occurrence and drinking ...

Evidence indicates that the incidence of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs) is increasing in spatial extent and temporal frequency worldwide. Cyanobacterial blooms produce highly potent toxins and huge, noxious biomasses in surface waters used for recreation, commerce, and as drinking water sources. The Interagency, International Symposium on Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (ISOC-H...
